Clinical indications
When it may be appropriate
Breast augmentation may be clinically appropriate for a patient whose breasts are:
- Narrow or constricted in shape, or have a volume that does not fit the patient’s frame.
- Asymmetrical — where one breast is significantly different in size, shape, or position from the other.
- Altered in size, shape, or position following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or a significant loss of weight.
A consultation with a surgeon is a crucial step in determining if surgery is clinically indicated, and if breast augmentation is the right procedure for you. Individual results vary.

All before and after

“I went to the Alexandra Private hospital in Chesterfield for a breast enlargement and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The whole process from start to finish was amazing. The staff at the hospital were so kind and made me feel at ease. My nurse, Bethany Hewitt, was incredible. I stayed overnight and she couldn’t do enough for me. The food was delicious and the hospital was so clean. Everything was explained so clearly and I knew I was in safe hands. I would 100% recommend this hospital to anyone considering cosmetic surgery. Thank you so much!”
Breast augmentation is the plastic surgery procedure considered by more patients than any other. At the Alexandra it is planned with a consultant you meet first, implants discussed in consultation, and a room you never share.
The operation places an implant to restore or create volume after pregnancy, weight change, or simply because the proportion you want has never quite arrived. Sizes and profiles are chosen with the consultant who would operate, not from a catalogue.
Breast augmentation is booked as a day case. Your admission, surgery, and discharge are on the same day, unless clinical reasons dictate otherwise. The operation usually takes around one hour, but can take longer. After surgery, you return to your own private room on the ward before you go home.
The incision/scar placement is discussed with the surgeon, and for many patients will be in the crease under the breast. In time, scars fade for most patients, but there is no guarantee that scars will not be visible.
Breast implants are supplied directly to the patients by breast implant manufacturers, and carry the manufacturers’ own guarantees and warranties to the patient. The government advises that breast implants are not lifetime devices, with removal and replacement being recommended over time. The government has also issued specific advice to patients who have breast implants: “If you have a breast implant and experience unexpected changes in size, shape or feel of your breast, please see your GP for a referral to the local NHS breast unit to be checked. It does not matter if the implants were inserted privately in the UK or anywhere else so long as you are entitled to NHS treatment.”
Breast augmentation is sometimes combined with a breast uplift in the same surgical session.
